From the get go they just seem like your typical adventurers with some fancy new weapons. The story of volume 5 was interesting to say the least, the four heroes and their companions went to a special chain of islands for an activation event which would give them more experience and prepare them for the next wave. That changes when volume five gets introduced though, while the light novel keeps things smooth in terms of story and flow this cannot be said about the web novel counterpart. While the web and light novel are pretty much identical for four volumes, despite some writing and language differences they are the same in essence.
